PATRICK IS A TWELVE-YEAR-OLD BOY who feels lonely and deserted by his parents; one day he meets three actors from the Caravan Theatre Company and impresses them with skills of singing and magic. Leaving home to join them as an actor, he is pursued by a truant officer, Madman McMann, a former member of the Company. The actors spend the winter touring and performing in northern Ontario schools. At the end, wisened by new people and places, Patrick returns to a welcome home.
