Death and Other Loves

Rowell Bowles

Penumbra Press Poetry Series, No. 65

ELEGIAC AND PASSIONATE, Death and Other Loves takes us from the poet's childhood in China, through family in Canada, and on into a long international life. Old loves die, new loves beckon. With literary flourish and wit, the poet finds a home in a great metropolis.

"Bowles has an uncanny talent for turning rare words and their juxtapositions into neat meanings and feelings, lexical wit into ready wisdom."
—C. Anderson Silber, Emeritus Professor of English, University of Toronto

Rowell Bowles

Rowell Bowles was born in Chengdu, China, where he lived until his family returned to Canada during the missionary exodus of 1926. He began his studies at Victoria College, University of Toronto, and went on to attend Johns Hopkins University.

For more than fifty years Bowles has been a spirited voice at the United Nations, holding various senior positions, including worldwide director of program policy for Unicef. He is the author of The Diplomacy of Hope, a critical history of the United Nations, and a recipient of the Order of Canada.

A true renaissance man, Bowles has augmented a rich professional career with an artistic one. As a painter, he received encouragement from the leader of the mid-century Montreal avant-garde, Paul-Emile Borduas, as well as Group of Seven member Arthur Lismer. His work has been exhibited at dozens of galleries, including the Dorothy Cameron Gallery (Toronto), Galerie Agnes Lefort (Montreal), the Pleiades Gallery (New York), and, most recently, O.K. Harris (New York, 2006). Major collections with his work include the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Carter Presidential Center, and the Art Gallery of Windsor.

Bowles divides his time between Manhattan and Grand Manan.
