Mattías Johannessen

Mattías Johannessen was born in Reykjavík on January 3rd, 1930. Educated at the universities of Iceland and Copenhagen, he began his career as a journalist with Iceland's leading newspaper, Morgunblağiğ. Within seven years he became their chief editor. Since his first book came out in 1958, he has written more than thirty books including novels, plays, short stories and poetry. A leading figure in the cultural life of Iceland, and more and more recognized in Scandinavia, Johannessen is almost unknown elsewhere. He was awarded the Icelandic Language Foundation prize in 1983.
