Remembering Glenn Gould
Twenty Interviews With People Who Knew Him

This interview took place on June 17, 2011, at Schabas's apartment in mid-town Toronto. In this excerpts, Schabas recalls his friendship with Gould in the early 1960s when they both were involved with music at Canada's Stratford Festival.

Ezra Schabas: Gould in Stratford

Ezra Schabas was born in New York in 1924, where he studied at the Juilliard School and Columbia University. In 1952 he moved to Toronto, where he became deeply involved in Canada's music culture, as a performing musician, teacher, journalist and administrator. Between 1978 and 1983 he was the Principal of Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music. Schabas is the author of several books, including Theodore Thomas: America's Conductor and Builder of Orchestras, 1835-1905; Sir Ernest MacMillan: the Importance of Being Canadian; and There's Music in these Walls (a history of the Royal Conservatory of Music).
