North Country Spring

Written by Elizabeth Kouhi
Illustrated by Judi Pennanen

Theme: The North's Seasons, Ages 5 to 8

North Country Spring

This is a book of poetry drawing on the sights and sounds of the "North Country," the landscape and its creatures, and the four seasons that create the variety and richness of the places.

The great blue heron, the kingfisher, loons and robins and jays, along with otters, squirrels, and rabbits appear in the poems. The poet also gives us the mountain ash, maples, alders and spruce in her lines.

Elizabeth Kouhi's poems show the beauty in the north country for children who live there, and for children in the city, her poems offer a way of opening up their imagination to the sensory experience of the North.

North Country Spring is a book to keep in your classroom as a resource for poems about any time of year.

North Country Spring's poems include rich visual images from all four seasons. Choose a theme poem from the book for each season or month, and write it on chart paper to hang on the wall. Read the chosen poem every day, and the children will pick it up and memorize it from rereading it frequently.

For example, "To Mr October Wind, Carpetman," would be an appropriate one for the month of October. Other fall poems from the book can be posted around the room, interspersed with drawings and paintings the children make about fall and the bright colours. After the poems have been posted for several weeks, let the children write poems about fall or October, and post their poems as well.
